[LOG OF 'AYANAMI REI' PICTURE] Character : Ayanami Rei From : Neon Genesis Evangelion By : Philip 'P-chan' Chan (may the person who I won't mention who gave me this ridicious nickname rot in hell) -------- Date started: 30th June 1998 Date finished: 4rd September 1998 (due to computer crash! ARGH!) Location: Um, when I was taking a bath Initial sketch time: approx. 30 min Equipment: 2H STAEDTLER MARS LUMOGRAPH pencil STABILO plastic eraser 2-ply bristol surface paper Inking time: approx. 15 min (yay, a large improvement!) Computer time: approx. 11-12 (!) hours [Comments when sketching] I decided to go by a slightly different style of drawing this time. Evangelion is a huge difference from Sailormoon so I had to experiment a bit. The picture was hard, so I doubt I will be repeating this kind of picture. Heh heh, I did this when I was taking a bath. I'm sure that some people like to 'soak' in a hot bath; I'm one of them. To pass the time, I took in with me my sketchbook and pencils. [Comments when inking] I still was slightly unsteady from my accident, I don't think it affected me too much. [Comments when colouring using computer] Takes a _long_ time as usual. As usual, try to break time up into sections; periods of 2 hours or similar. Oh yeah, listen to music; it can help you pass the time. Oh, and this is where my computer crashed. I mean, I rely on computers. A lot. So does a lot of people I know. But what happens if it goes to shit? Damn, that's what. Bloody F***ing damning wasting that amount of f***ing time... Sorry. I don't normally blow my top. I'm sure you can understand. PS. I HATE DRAWING LIPS! Takes me bloody ages to get it like that! PPS. Backgrounds... they take me a long time... sigh. ---------------------------------------------------- [Other comments] As usual, I work with a large picture and colour it in first. Then, using a special program, I shrink the pic so the colours meld together and the effect looks nicer (aren't I kind to you people?). Thing is, colouring a large picture takes flippin' ages. I learnt a new way of drawing lips, and creating my own background. Shadows are still hard to work out on the picture. ---------------------------------------------------- Some advice for the budding artists (and experienced artists as well): ---------------------------------------------------- ^Have good light in the room you're in; bad light hurts the eyes ^Choose the correct pencils ^When sketching, work lightly, so if you make mistakes (like I do sometimes; I'm not perfect, and neither is most people), you can rub out without leaving marks on the paper. ^Talking about paper and rubbers, get decent versions of each. Having heavyweight paper (stiff and thick paper) is good, because it can take the strain of repeated rubbing out stuff. ^Listen to good music while you're drawing; it helps you to concentrate (well, for me, anyway). Good luck in the world of fanart. Check out the other artists on Jackie Chiang's page and Greenbeans' page for different styles. I've adopted a style similar to the anime version of Sailormoon. Lucky for me, I got used to the style almost immediately (Hotaru.JPG is my first ever picture of the style of Sailormoon). If you need more help, this site might help you. http://www.intellink.net/~rfarkaly/ Darkstar's home page, this is where you can learn how to draw Sailormoon and co. Of course, me being me, I did not require the use of this place (gee, how extremely modest of me). The owner, Darkstar, is also a brill fanartist who uses a computer for colours. Try asking him/her how they do it as well. (the drawing, not whatever you were thinking, so get your mind out of the gutter) Arigato for listening to me.
