Sailormoon DVD Reviews

Welcome! Here you can read extensive, thorough reviews (which were quite time-consuming) made by me, Matthew, of the Sailormoon DVDs released by Pioneer. The reviews are split up into into 3 different sections under the Pioneer heading for orderliness and convenience.

I don't plan on purchasing AD Vision's Sailor Moon (English dub) DVDs and reviewing them, unless by some extraordinary means I acquire a large amount of money in the future and feel spend-happy. I will look into purchasing AD Vision's Sailormoon (original uncut Japanese) DVDs whenever they're finally released.

I also don't plan on buying any of Toei's DVDs in the near future since I don't have a multi-region DVD player... yet.

Pioneer | Toei | AD Vision (Cut) | AD Vision (Uncut)

Sailormoon S, SuperS, Movies (Region 1)

Pioneer has been releasing Sailormoon S, Sailormoon SuperS, and the trilogy of Movies onto uncut subbed VHS, uncut dubbed VHS, cut dubbed VHS, and uncut bilingual DVD. Depending on how SuperS sales fare, Pioneer may acquire the subtitling rights to Sailormoon SailorStars.

Sailormoon, R, S, SuperS, Sailorstars, Movies, Specials (Region 2)

Toei has finally begun working on Region 2 DVD releases of all 200 of the Sailormoon anime episodes, 3 special episodes, 3 movies, and the two theatrical shorts. The movies and the shorts were released together in a 4-disc DVD box set on March 21st, 2002, with the following on each disc:

In 2000, the 5 Sailormoon TV series were going to be released in volumes on DVD every month beginning in May, and the plan was 2-3 separate DVDs at a time with 5-7 episodes per DVD. When the time came for the last 2 DVD volumes of a series to be released, they were supposed to either be purchased separately, or bundled together with a special series-specific box big enough to house all of the DVDs for that particular series. Toei did release all of the first series of Sailormoon following the aforementioned schedule, but they have yet to begin releasing Sailormoon R and are holding off for unknown reasons.

The release schedule for all 200 episodes (and 3 special episodes) of Sailormoon listed in the table below is what would have happened had Toei released each series directly one after the other. Only the first series of Sailormoon followed the release schedule below.

Sailor Moon seasons 1, 2 & 3 (Region 1) *

ADV is finishing the process of releasing all of the English DIC dub episodes of Sailor Moon onto DVD. The DVD covers are rather simple, and there are no real extras on the discs, but for fans of the English DIC series this is good considering the DVDs are inexpensive and better than VHS quality.

* Please note that the 2 arcs of the R series were broken into 2 "seasons" in North America, The Doom Tree (2) and The Negamoon (3)

Sailormoon, R (Region 1)

AD Vision, the company that is releasing all of the DIC dub on VHS/DVD, has publicly declared that they have acquired the subtitling rights to Sailormoon and Sailormoon R. They have suggested they are planning an uncut VHS release along with an uncut DVD release. AD Vision has not disclosed any other information at this time concerning their future productions of Sailormoon. We'll just have to wait patiently.
